Week Thirteen – Part Three

Up early again and the excitement and joy hasn’t worn off even though it’s going to be a bit more mundane until it’s time to put the trusses up.

Molly nails on the last strip of OSB.

Andrew has just phoned with a task list for us and for Scott and Eoghain. We have to do some work on the shed.

The other two have to get on with levelling the panels and putting the timbers round the top to add strength to the construction and bind them panels together.

We are faced with the challenge of wrapping the shed in a breather membrane. This helps protect the timber during construction and when the house is finished allows it to ‘breathe’ to prevent build up of moisture in the frame.

The black on the lower part of the shed is the breather membrane.

We have had to give up after attaching the bottom strip because we only have one platform to stand on and the membrane needs to be wrapped in continious strips which would need two or a scaffolding.

Pete drilling holes in preparation of the anchor straps being bolted into the concrete to prevent the building blowing away in the event of a gale.
The final checks to make sure everything is level.

It’s time to tidy up and head off to Oban for a wee bit of shopping because we are having a visit from Zadjil and Carolyn, our son and his wife.

Our first dinner party in our new house.

Having dinner in the house with family is the perfect way to end a great week. We hope this is the first of many, many happy days in our home in Argyll.

By Pete Ross

After years of living in a beautiful Victorian flat in Edinburgh, Molly and I have decided to sell up and build our new house ourselves in Argyll, Scotland. We have called it Gar Bothan which is Gaelic for warm bothy or cottage or hovel!!!!
